The Ping Gai Shi Piao (平盖石瓢) is a variation of the classic Shi Piao Yixing teapot style, distinguished by its flat lid that subtly improves lid seal. It is crafted from Zhong Cao Qing Zi Ni (中槽清紫泥), often referred to as "middle trench clear purple clay," which is a premium subtype of purple clay characterized by its dense texture, high iron content and natural quartz particles. Fired twice at around 1180°C, it develops a vibrant purple-brown tone with subtle mineral highlights. Ideal for brewing oolong, pu-erh, black tea and heavily roasted varieties.
About the Engraving
The teapot is engraved on both sides and the lid with plum blossoms and bamboo, accompanied by the inscription “双清” (Twin Purities). In Chinese literati tradition, plum and bamboo pairing, known as “梅竹双清” (Twin Purities of Plum Blossoms and Bamboo), represents the dual purity embodied by these plants: the plum blossom for its resilience to bloom in winter snow, and the bamboo for its evergreen clarity.
