Xue Pian Ya Shi Xiang (雪片鸭屎香), or Snowflake Duck Shit Aroma, is a rare and highly coveted winter-harvested Phoenix Dancong oolong. Xue Pian, or 'Snowflake,' refers to the fifth harvest of the year, a rare occurrence in Phoenix Mountain where mild winters allow select tea trees to sprout once more. This late-season growth produces a tea with an intensely rich floral aroma and lasting sweetness, particularly in cultivars like Ya Shi Xiang and Da Wu Ye.
This 2024 Winter Snowflake Ya Shi Xiang comes from Dongjiao Village at an elevation of 700 meters, an area known for its nutrient-rich soils and misty conditions that enhance the complexity of Phoenix Dancong teas. Winter harvest Dancong is particularly rare, as it yields the lowest quantity of the year, making each batch highly prized among tea enthusiasts.
The dry leaves are thick and slightly curled, with a deep dark brown hue and yellow tips. When brewed, the tea releases an enchanting floral bouquet, led by gardenia, jasmine, and a soft creamy aroma reminiscent of fresh milk. The liquor is smooth and full-bodied, with a rich interplay of sweet florals and crisp, refreshing notes that linger long after each sip. The tea’s fragrance and taste seamlessly intertwine, creating a sensory experience that is both deeply aromatic and elegantly structured.
The tale behind Ya Shi Xiang’s unusual name adds to its allure—legend has it that local farmers, eager to protect this prized tea from being stolen, spread a false rumor that it grew in soil enriched with duck droppings. The name stuck, but the tea itself is revered for its refined aroma and exquisite taste. Formally, Ya Shi Xiang is known as Yin Hua Xiang (银花香), further emphasizing its delicate floral character reminiscent of honeysuckle and gardenia. Each infusion unveils new layers of complexity, making it a must-try for those seeking a refined and long-lasting Dancong oolong experience.
