Shui Xian (水仙), meaning “Water Sprite,” is one of the most celebrated Wuyi rock teas, widely admired for its mellow character, rich body, and enduring finish. Alongside Da Hong Pao and Rou Gui, it forms the backbone of classic Yan Cha. As the local saying goes: “No rock tea exceeds the mellowness of Shui Xian and the fragrance of Rou Gui.”
The Shui Xian cultivar is known for its large, late-maturing leaves and deep-rooted arbor growth habit. This tea was harvested in spring 2023 from Hu Xiao Yan (虎啸岩, Tiger Roaring Rock), a notable cliff garden within the Zheng Yan (正岩) core of Wuyi Mountain National Park. Grown at 300–400 meters elevation, the tea benefits from the rocky, mineral-rich soil and biodiverse environment of this protected heritage area.
This particular batch is a refined Orchid Aroma Shui Xian (兰香水仙)—a style distinguished by its naturally floral fragrance, which emerges during the leaf-shaking stage unique to oolong processing. The tea was then roasted traditionally over charcoal, reaching a medium roast level. This level of roast deepens the body and strengthens the structure of the tea, while still retaining the signature floral notes that make this style so distinctive.
The result is a balanced and expressive Shui Xian with classic Wuyi depth and a lingering floral character—a standout for those who enjoy a more structured rock tea without sacrificing elegance.
