This 2023 Fengqing Dian Hong is a traditionally processed black tea from its birthplace, Fengqing County, following the classic withering, rolling, oxidation, and baking dry process. It is made from native Feng Qing Da Ye Zhong (Big Leaf Varietal) tea trees, which thrive at an altitude of approximately 2200 meters.

Using early spring harvest leaves, this tea adheres to a one bud, two leaves picking standard, ensuring exceptional quality and depth of flavor. The dry leaves are adorned with abundant golden fuzz, exuding a honey-like sweet aroma. As the spring harvest is considered the highest quality of the year, this tea exemplifies high-grade traditional Dian Hong.

Before 1939, Fengqing primarily produced raw leaf maocha, which was compressed into Sheng Pu’er tea. However, due to war disruptions in the 1930s, China sought to strengthen its southwestern tea production to sustain international trade. In spring 1939, tea experts at the newly established Shunning Tea Factory (later renamed Fengqing Tea Factory in 1954) successfully produced black tea using Yunnan’s big leaf tea varietal, marking the birth of Dian Hong.

The earliest Dian Hong black tea batches were transported through rugged mountain roads to Hong Kong and London, where its aromatic profile and rich taste quickly gained popularity in the British market. However, during World War II in 1942, exports were temporarily halted. After 1950, exports resumed, expanding Dian Hong’s reputation across the globe.

This 2023 Fengqing Dian Hong represents a continuation of this rich history, delivering a deep amber liquor with a smooth, malty sweetness, floral undertones, and a lingering honeyed finish. It is a classic and refined choice for lovers of Yunnan black tea.
